Men's Soccer plays to 2-2 draw with N.C. Wesleyan

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team tied 2-2 with N.C. Wesleyan today at the Methodist Fall Classic in Fayetteville, N.C.

The Panthers now stand at 1-1-1 on the year, while the Battling Bishops move to 1-0-1 to remain unbeaten.

BSC got on the board first in the 15th minute on a header by freshman Haraldur Birgisson. Sophomore Cory Gonzalez assisted the goal on a cross to Birgisson, who was making a back post run.

Wesleyan tied it up in the 31st minute when Andri Bjarnson beat two Panthers as he dribbled into the box and shot far post past BSC senior goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the 49th minute when Grimsson was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick to give Wesleyan a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers fought back to score in the 77th minute when Birgisson crossed the ball from the left side to onrushing senior Armann Gunnlaugsson, who finished the ball on his first touch out of the air.

Regulation expired with the score still tied, and the teams played through two 10-minute overtime periods without another goal in the game.

Wesleyan out-shot BSC 24-15, 10-6 on-goal. Senior Jarred Brookins and Gonzalez led the Panthers with three shots apiece. Grimsson played all 110 minutes in the net and recorded eight saves.

The Panthers take on the host Methodist Monarchs tomorrow at noon Eastern.
