GREENVILLE, Pa.—The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team won a 2-1 double-overtime thriller against Medaille College, Saturday, in the Thiel College Tomcat Tournament in Greenville, Pa.
BSC moves to 2-2-1 on the season, while Medaille falls to 5-1 with its first loss of the year.
While the final score was 2-1, the Mavericks scored first in the 41st minute off a long throw-in resulting in the ball sitting on the six-yard line to be put away by Tor George.
The 1-0 halftime score did not deter the Panthers as they continued to push. A hand ball called in the box resulted in a penalty kick for BSC in the 85th minute, when junior Tobias Winter tucked the ball into the side netting to even the score.
Regulation finished with the score still tied at 1-1, as did the first 10-minute overtime period, but BSC freshman Johannes Loeffler served the ball over the back line to senior Armann Gunnlaugsson, who took it to the end line and played it back across to Loeffler rushing forward near the six-yard box. The golden goal ended the game in the 106th minute to give the Panthers their second win of the young season.
BSC is back in action tomorrow, taking on Adrian College at 11 a.m. ET.
