Strong defense helps Panthers shut out Oglethorpe at home, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Southern Athletic Association play on Sunday with a 3-0 shutout of Oglethorpe at BSC Soccer Park.

The Panthers move to 6-4-5 overall and 3-0-3 in the SAA, while the Stormy Petrels fall to 8-5 overall and 2-4 in league action.

Junior Brooks Busby scored the first two goals, both in the first half. The first was in the 16th minute off an assist from freshman Johannes Loeffler, and the second was in the 34th minute off an assist from freshman Haraldur Birgisson.

Senior Armann Gunnlaugsson scored the final goal in the 70th minute, assisted by senior Nathan Haywood.

Senior goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson played the entire game and recorded six saves. Busby led the Panthers with four of their 16 shots. BSC out-shot OU 16-13 overall, and shots-on-goal were even at six for each team.

The Panthers are at home again next weekend for the regular season finale, facing Millsaps on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. BSC will then host the 2012 SAA Men's Soccer Championship, Nov. 2-4.
