BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Sixth-seeded Oglethorpe upset third-seeded Birmingham-Southern Friday evening, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the SAA Men's Soccer Championship, hosted by the Panthers at BSC Soccer Park.
The Stormy Petrels move to 9-6, while the Panthers fall to 6-5-6.
OU's Nick Muntean scored the first goal of the game in the fifth minute, assisted by Carlos Gaston, and the Panthers tied it up barely two minutes later when the Petrels committed a foul inside the box and junior Tobias Winter connected on a penalty kick for BSC.
The Petrels pulled ahead in the 20th minute on a goal by Gaston, assisted by Nikos Papanikolopoulos, and took the 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
Gaston found the back of the net again less than a minute into the second half, off an assist from Jakub Madej, and OU held onto its 3-1 advantage for the remainder of the game.
Oglethorpe out-shot BSC 14-11, 6-2 on-goal, led by Gaston with three shots. Junior Brynjar Arnason led BSC with four shots.
Senior Sveinbo Grimsson played all 90 minutes in the net for the Panthers and recorded three saves; Frank Petersen also played the duration for OU, making one save.
Oglethorpe advances to tomorrow's semifinal round, facing second-seeded Berry College at 2:30 p.m. In earlier games today, top-seeded Centre defeated eighth seed Rhodes, 2-1, fourth seed Millsaps defeated fifth-seed Hendrix, 2-1, and Berry defeated seventh seed Sewanee, 5-0. Berry and Millsaps will face off at noon tomorrow.
