BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nathan Haywood, a senior on the Birmingham-Southern Men's Soccer team, has been awarded an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship according to a release by the organization on Wednesday. Haywood is one of 30 national winners throughout NCAA Divisions I, II and III.
"Nathan Haywood is one of the most outstanding young men I have ever had the privilege of coaching," BSC Head Men's Soccer Coach Preston Goldfarb said. "He is a person of great Honor, Integrity and Loyalty and this award by the NCAA is justification for all his outstanding leadership as a student, player and person. I could not be any prouder of any player that I have had the honor of coaching, than Nathan Haywood."
"Nathan is a representation of the best of student-athletes in the nation," added Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Kyndall Waters. "You would struggle to find a young person who excels as much in athletics, academics, philanthropy and faith as Nathan does. We are so proud of all of his accomplishments as a student-athlete at Birmingham-Southern and thankful that he has represented our institution in superior fashion. Nathan is most deserving of this recognition from the NCAA, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors".
The Fairhope, Ala., native earned Southern Athletic Association All-Conference honors and was named to the league's Academic Honor Roll in the fall. Haywood also was selected to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American All-District IV and Academic All-America® Division III Men's Soccer teams in January.
Haywood, a chemistry/pre-med major, carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average and will continue his education in the UAB School of Medicine following graduation. He played and started in all 17 games in 2012, recording one goal and one assist while helping the BSC defense shut out five opponents.
