BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team picked up another win today, shutting out Emory & Henry College, 5-0, in the final game of the Jim 'n Nick's/Puma Labor Day Classic.
The Panthers move to 2-0, while the Wasps fall to 0-2. Earlier today, Methodist University defeated Rhodes College 3-2.
Freshman Spencer Nichols scored the first goal of the game off an assist from senior Jeremy Evans in the eighth minute. It would turn out to be the game-winner, marking Nichols' second game-winning goal in as many games after scoring the golden goal in overtime against Methodist on Friday night.
Freshman Conner Quiggle put BSC up 2-0 less than three minutes later, scoring off a Nichols assist, and a goal from seior Kristjan Bryde in the 17th minute, assisted by senior Tobias Winter, pushed the lead to 3-0.
Winter found the back of the net in the 30th minute, assisted by Quiggle, to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead at the half.
The second half was scoreless until the 83rd minute when Emory & Henry fouled BSC in the box, prompting a penalty kick. Junior Johannes Loeffler connected on the PK, wrapping up the scoring for the game.
The Panthers out-shot the Wasps 35-3, 17-2 on-goal, and took 11 corner kicks to Emory & Henry's one. Nichols and Winter led the team with six shots apiece.
Junior Jonas Heidrich started in goal and played almost the entire first half, recording one save. Freshman Louis Fagelson came in for 46 minutes and also made one save. Wasp keeper Joe Kedanis recorded 12 saves in 90 minutes of play.
The Panthers are on the road next weekend, traveling to Wilmington, Ohio, for the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic, facing Wilmington College Friday at 6:30 p.m. Central and Marietta College Saturday at 4 p.m. Central.
