Oglethorpe edges Panthers, 2-1
ATLANTA, Ga.—Courtesy of a second-half goal to break the 1-1 tie, league-leading Oglethorpe defeated the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team 2-1 Friday afternoon at Salamone Field in Atlanta.
The Panthers fall to 9-5-1 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Stormy Petrels move to 8-2-2 overall and are atop the conference standings at 4-0-1 in league play.
OU's Aleks Tanjga scored the first goal of the game, an unassisted score in the 18th minute, and the Panthers responded less than 10 minutes later with the equalizer in the 27th minute. Junior Johannes Loeffler scored his fifth goal of the year off an assist from junior Ian Everett to knot the game at 1-1.
The tie stood through the rest of the first half until the 59th minute when Nikos Papanikolopoulos found the back of the net to put the Petrels ahead again. BSC turned up its offensive effort after that but was unable to score. The Panthers had several chances in the final minutes of play, with OU keeper Brock Marvin making three saves in a row in the 87th minute to stave off the Panther attack and preserve the OU victory.
BSC is on the road again this Sunday, taking on another conference foe located in Georgia, facing Berry College Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern in Rome, Ga.
