BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Courtesy of two first-half goals, the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a 2-0 shutout of UT Dallas in game two of the Jim 'n Nick's/Puma Labor Day Classic, Friday evening at Preston Goldfarb Field at Berylson Park.

In the season opener for both teams, the Comets out-shot the Panthers 18-10, but five of BSC's shots were on-goal and two found their mark. The first came in the 16th minute when sophomore newcomer Dominik Faber scored off an assist from Bastian Jedliczka, a junior newcomer. BSC expanded its lead to 2-0 with three minutes left in the first half on a goal from sophomore Conner Quiggle, assisted by sophomore Spencer Nichols.

Although UT Dallas had several chances to score down the stretch in the second half, the Panther defense held strong, with sophomore goalkeeper Louis Fagelson making four saves in the final 13 minutes of action to hold the Comets scoreless and preserve the shutout victory.

The Panthers are back in action on Sunday in the Labor Day Classic, playing host to in-state rival Huntingdon at 2:30 p.m. UT Dallas and Oglethorpe, who defeated Huntingdon 2-0 earlier this evening, will face off at noon on Sunday prior to BSC's game.
