Men's Soccer advances to SAA semifinals with 2-1 victory against Oglethorpe

CONWAY, Ark.—With two goals courtesy of the combination of juniors Bastian Jedliczka and Claudio Lipp, the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team hung on to defeat Oglethorpe, 2-1, in the first round of the 2014 Southern Athletic Association Championship, Friday evening in Conway, Ark.

The second-seeded Panthers move to 12-3-1, while the seventh-seeded Stormy Petrels end their season with a record of 7-11-1. BSC moves on to face third-seeded Centre in tomorrow's semifinal round at 2:30 p.m. Centre defeated sixth-seeded Sewanee this evening in a shootout.

BSC's first goal came in the 30th minute when Lipp sent a through ball down the middle of the field to Jedliczka. The Panthers held a 1-0 lead at the half, and then scored again in the 68th minute when Lipp passed to the left side of the field where Jedliczka sent the ball into the corner of the net. Jedliczka now leads the SAA with 16 goals.

The Petrels got on the board in the 81st minute on an unassisted goal by Nick Muntean, but OU was not able to find the net again in the final minutes.

OU out-shot BSC 17-6, 9-5 on-goal, with senior goalkeeper Jonas Heidrich making seven saves. The Petrels also had six corner kicks, four more than the Panthers.
