Men's Soccer downs Centre in SAA semifinal, 1-0, to move to title game

CONWAY, Ark.—A conference tournament championship is now a single victory away for the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team, as the Panthers shut out Centre College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championship in Conway, Ark.

Second-seeded BSC moved to 13-3-1 in its fourth-straight win, while third-seeded Centre fell to 8-4-6. The Panthers will face fifth-seeded Berry in tomorrow's title match, kicking off at 1 p.m. on Warrior Field. The Vikings upset fourth-seeded Rhodes on Friday, 1-0, and top-seeded Millsaps today, also 1-0, to advance to the championship game.

Defense ruled the day as both teams combined for a mere nine shots on goal, with BSC holding the 5-4 edge in the category. Senior goalkeeper Jonas Heidrich anchored the defensive effort and tallied his fifth complete match shut-out of the season in the win.

The lone goal of the match came in the 36th minute off a junior Bastian Jedliczka penalty kick. Sophomore Dominik Faber drew a foul in the box leading to Jedliczka's SAA-leading 17th goal of the season, and third of the conference tournament, accounting for all Panther goals on the weekend thus far.
