BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern College men's soccer team defeated Franklin College 3-1 in day one of the 2016 Labor Day Classic at Preston Goldfarb Field Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jackson Lynn (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) scored his first two collegiate goals, including the game winner. BSC moved to 2-0 overall.
The Panthers opened scoring in the 35th minute. Alec Medd (Ottawa, Canada/Darlington School) redirected a pass from Brother Swagler (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) to the upper left corner of the goal. It was his first goal of the season.
BSC would push their lead to two with just 3:32 left in the first half. Lynn dribbled through three defenders from the Panthers defensive half into the top of Franklin's box. With one last quick move to the right, he drilled the ball across the goalies face and into the left side of the net.
The Grizzlies responded in the 69th minute of the second half to pull within one. Lynn pushed the lead back out to two in the 81st minute. He dove on a long cross pass from Swagler and headed it in.
Galen Curry (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) earned the start in goal. He and the Panthers defense didn't allow any shots on goal in the first half. The win is his first of the year after putting in a full 90 minutes of work.
Birmingham-Southern continues play in the Labor Day Classic tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 5 against Louisiana College. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
