BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern College men's soccer team moved to 3-0 overall on the season with a 9-0 win against Louisiana College Monday afternoon to close out the 2016 BSC Labor Day Classic. Eight different goal scorers pitched in for the win, while the BSC defense dominated, not allowing a single shot from the Grizzlies.
Brother Swagler (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) led the team with two goals on the day.
The Panthers opened scoring in the 17th minute. Patrick Erickson (Washington, D.C./St. Stephens & St. Agnes School) pushed a through ball past the defense and Dylan Rose (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood HS) chipped it over the advancing keeper. Erickson netted a goal of his own just 2:30 minutes later. Taking a cross from Dallas Coyne (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS), he timed his run to find the ball behind the defense in the middle of the box and punched it in.
Coyne earned his second goal of the year unassisted in the 23rd minute, striking on a free kick 20 yards out.
BSC went ahead by four in the first half in the 28th minute. Chris Duffey (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) sent a cross from the right into the box and Swagler sent it in for his first goal of the season.
The Panthers continued the offensive onslaught in the second half.
Tommy Rizzoli (Washington, D.C./Bridgton Academy) took a penalty kick in the 50th minute to put BSC up 5-0. Then Tylan Jones (Peachtree City, Ga./College of Charleston) earned his first goal of the year in the 63rd minute off a corner pass from Rizzoli. Jones executed a diving header on the left side of the goal, placing it past keeper Nathan Gautreaux.
It would be 10 minutes until the Panthers found the back of the net again.
Alec Medd (Ottawa, Canada/Darlington School) was fouled in the box and took the penalty kick himself in the 73rd minute, drilling it into the upper left corner.
Swagler netted his second goal of the game in the 77th minute on a pass from Trey O'Bryant (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Northridge HS). O'Bryant then assisted Ryan Gill (Franklin, Tenn./Brentwood HS) two minutes later for the Panthers ninth goal.
Kurt Moore (Euharlee, Ga./Darlington School) earned the start and spent 70:38 in the net for Birmingham-Southern.
The Panthers hit the road next to take on LaGrange College, Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. ET.
