BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A tough, hard-fought match between Birmingham-Southern and the Belhaven Blazers - a match that saw 32 fouls and six cards between both sides - ended in a 1-1 double overtime draw on Wednesday night.
Panther sophomore Ryan Hepp, with an assist from junior defender Luke Hambleton, opened up the scoring with a goal in the 73rd minute, but the Blazers responded six minutes later with an equalizer in the 79th minute. The score would remain 1-1 for the remainder of regulation, sending the Panthers to their first overtime period this season.
Both teams continued to pressure the other, but after 20 minutes and two overtime periods the stalemate could not be broken and the game ended in a draw.
Sophomore forward Jackson Lynn led BSC with four shots and three shots on goal. Belhaven outshot BSC 16-11 but the Panthers had more looks at the net with seven shots on goal compared to the Belhaven's five.
Both keepers, BSC's Galen Curry and Belhaven's Bailey Hart, finished the match with four saves each.
With the tie, the Panthers move to 3-2-1 on the season. Birmingham-Southern will travel to Emory next for its match on Saturday, Sept. 16. BSC's next home match will be Saturday, Sept. 30 against Rhodes.
