BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team fell to Southern Athletic Association foe Oglethorpe 3-1 on Sunday afternoon, falling to 8-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference.
Coming into the match, Oglethorpe and BSC were No. 1 and No. 2 in the conference standings, respectively, and both were undefeated in league play. With the loss, Birmingham-Southern's four-game unbeaten streak was ended.
The Petrels opened up the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 29th minute, and they would take a 2-0 advantage 10 minutes into the second half after a BSC foul in the box gave Oglethorpe a penalty kick chance.
BSC got back in the game in the 63rd minute, cutting Oglethorpe's lead in half after senior defender Luke Hambleton (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) converted on a penalty kick, awarded after a Panther attacker was brought down in the box.
Birmingham-Southern's comeback attempt was hampered, however, when 10 minutes later Oglethorpe's Adam Sole scored, giving his team the final 3-1 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Galen Curry (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) finished the match with nine saves.
The Panthers sit in fourth place in the SAA standings after the loss, falling behind Rhodes, Berry and first-place Oglethorpe.
BSC will hit the road for its next two matches, SAA contests against Sewanee and Centre before returning home for a homecoming game against Millsaps on Saturday, Oct. 20.
