Men's Tennis opens conference play with 6-3 win over Millsaps

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team opened its Southern Athletic Association schedule on Friday, defeating Millsaps 6-3 at the newly-minted Ann Dielen Tennis Complex. The Panthers move to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAA.

The Panthers won at all but the top two singles positions, with sophomore Patrick Hire, freshman Alex Makarenko, junior Ben Reardon, and senior Blake Nuwayhid all picking up victories. Hire and Makarenko won at two doubles, and Nuwayhid and freshman Blake Crosby won at three doubles.

Makarenko leads BSC with a perfect 7-0 record in singles play, while Brandt/Reardon lead in doubles with a 5-0 mark. Hire and Makarenko are also 5-1.

Prior to today's match, BSC's tennis facility was officially named to honor long-time coach Ann Dielen, who is in her 38th season with the program.

The team travels to Orange Beach, Fla., next weekend for spring break, where the Panthers will face Transylvania on Friday, March 14, and Point University on Saturday, March 15.
