BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team picked up a big conference win at home today, defeating Rhodes, 6-3, for the first time in program history at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
The Panthers, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) move to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Athletic Association, and are on a five-game winning streak. Rhodes is ranked 15th in the region.
BSC won all three doubles points. Seniors Christian Matthews and Tony DaMaia won at the top doubles position, moving to 5-4, sophomore Patrick Hire and freshman Alex Makarenko moved to 9-1 on the season with a win at two doubles, and junior Brian Brandt and Ben Reardon remained perfect at 9-0 after winning at three doubles.
Brandt, Makarenko, and Reardon recorded the Panthers' other three points with wins at two, four, and six singles. Brandt moves to 8-2, Makarenko remains undefeated at 11-0, and Reardon moves to 9-2.
The team is at home again next weekend, hosting two more SAA matches against Oglethorpe on Saturday and Berry on Sunday, both at 9 a.m.
