Men's Tennis downs Oglethorpe to advance to SAA title match
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—The third-seeded Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team upset second-seeded Oglethorpe today, 6-3, to advance to the title match of the 2014 Southern Athletic Association Championship at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The Panthers move to 12-4 on the season and will face top-seeded Sewanee tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. for the SAA title.
BSC won today at two and three doubles to pull ahead in the match, with sophomore Patrick Hire and freshman Alex Makarenko winning at two and juniors Brian Brandt and Ben Reardon winning at three. In singles, Brandt and Hire won in the two and three spots, while Makarenko won at four and senior Tony DaMaia won at five singles.
Makarenko leads the team with a 14-1 mark in singles play, and he and Hire are 13-2 in doubles action. Brandt and Reardon are also an impressive 13-1 in doubles play.
