MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—The Birmingham-Southern tennis teams saw their seasons end on Saturday in the semifinals of the 2015 Southern Athletic Association Championship, with the women falling to top-seeded No. 12 Sewanee, 5-0, and the men losing to second-seeded Millsaps, 5-4.
The fourth-seeded women fell to 10-3, and the third-seeded men dropped to 11-3.
The women lost 8-3, 8-2, and 8-0 in doubles play before losing at four and six singles to end the match. The 12th-ranked Tigers moved to 16-5 with the win.
Freshman Carlee Petro, the Panthers' No. 1 singles player, ended the season with a 10-1 record, and she and junior Sara Cohen went 10-3 in doubles play. Cohen was 9-3 at two singles, and freshman Katie Scherer was 11-1 at three singles. Sophomore Mary Evelyn Carroll went 7-4 in the fourth singles spot, and junior Virginia Hammond was 7-2 at five singles. Carroll and Hammond also combined to go 10-2 at three doubles, and Scherer and junior Lindsey Farrell went 9-4 at two doubles.
In the men's match, the Panthers won at one doubles, with junior Patrick Hire and sophomore Alex Makarenko winning 8-3, but the Majors won at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, and No. 3, 9-8 (6). Makarenko and Hire won at the top two singles spots, and freshman Lee Thompson won at six singles, but Millsaps clinched the match victory with wins at three, four, and five singles.
Makarenko ends the season with a 12-1 record at the top singles spot, while Hire went 12-2 at two singles. The pair combined to go 11-3 in doubles play, while senior Ben Reardon and freshman Jacob Weinacker went 10-4 at two doubles. Weinacker was 11-2 at No. 3 singles, and Thompson was impressive with a 12-0 record at six singles in his freshman campaign.
