BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team opened conference play Friday afternoon with a 6-3 win against Millsaps at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
The Panthers improved to 4-3 on the season with the win.
The Panthers opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches. Junior Alex Makarenko and senior Patrick Hire won 8-3 at the No. 1 position, while sophomore Jacob Weinacker and freshman Anthony Pellegrini won 9-7 at No. 2. Juniors Henry Crosby and David Goodloe lost 9-7 in a closely contested match at three doubles.
BSC opened singles play with Makarenko and Pellegrini quickly winning at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions. Weinacker clinched the victory at two singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Sophomore Lee Thompson finished the scoring for BSC with a three-set victory 6-3,3-6,6-1.
The Panthers travel to Orlando, Fla., on Saturday to play five matches in as many days. They will return to conference play on Saturday, April 2, at 9 a.m. at home against Oglethorpe.
