ORLANDO, Fla.—The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team capped off its Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla., with two more wins on Wednesday, defeating Whitworth College 6-3 and Hope College 7-2 at Lake Kane Tennis Center.
The Panthers moved to 9-2 with the wins. It was a long day of tennis for BSC, with the first match starting at 11:30 a.m. and the second finishing at 6:30 p.m.
In the first match against Whitworth, BSC took two of the three doubles matches with wins from senior Patrick Hire and junior Alex Makarenko (8-3) at No. 1 and freshman Anthony Pellegrini and sophomore Jacob Weinacker (9-2) at No. 2.
In singles action BSC took the top three positions with Makarenko, Weinacker, and Hire all winning in closely contested matches. Sophomore Lee Thompson clinched the victory at No. 6, winning 6-3,3-6,10-6. Junior George Chunn and Pellegrini both split sets but lost in a match tiebreaker.
In the second match against Hope College, with only a 20-minute break after the conclusion of the Whitworth match, the singles matches were played first. The Panthers quickly jumped on top by winning all six first sets, but Hope put up a fight in the second sets before BSC closed out all six matches. The order of finish was Hire, junior Charlie Rowe, Weinacker, Makarenko, Pellegrini, and Thompson.
In doubles action Hire/Makarenko won at No. 1, 8-1, but the Panthers lost the remaining two doubles matches as juniors Henry Crosby and Charlie Goodloe lost 8-6 and sophomores Will Moore and Sebastian Schneider lost 8-3 at No. 3.
"I am very proud of the physical and mental toughness the team showed today," Head Coach Jimmy Weinacker said. "The effects of our conditioning program were very evident as we played four matches in three days in the Florida heat."
The Panthers are back in action on April 2, hosting Oglethorpe, and April 3, hosting Berry, both at 9 a.m. at the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex.
