BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team completed competition at the Fall Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships this weekend with Alex Makarenko (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS) winning his singles consolation bracket. The Panthers collected seven singles and three doubles wins over the weekend.
After falling in the first round of the main singles bracket, Makarenko survived a tie-break in his first consolation match against John Dangerfield of Methodist (7-5, 1-6, 10-3), then went on to sweep Ryan Miner of Berry College in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to reach the main 17-32 consolation final.
He then faced his second tie-break of the tournament against Tate Goodwin of Guilford after losing the first set 4-6 and rallying to win the second 7-6. Makarenko earned the 10-8 win and the match.
George Chunn (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) advanced to the B Singles Blue semifinal, but he fell to Nicolas Malinauskas of N.C. Wesleyan (6-0, 6-1).
The Panthers break from competition for the remainder of the fall. They resume on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Trinity (Tex.) to open their championship season.
