BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Both the Birmingham-Southern College men's and women's tennis teams closed out a competitive fall season by receiving national recognition. The women rank 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region, while the men are ranked 13th.
"So proud of these early rankings," said women's head coach Ann Dielen. "The team is working hard to improve and get better every day."
Carlee Petro (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) leads the individual rankings. She is No. 42 in the nation after fall competition, up from her No. 49 final ranking at the end of the 2016 season. Petro also ranks 11th in the south region for singles. She and partner Virginia Hammond (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) are the ninth ranked doubles team in the region.
Both teams open their spring sessions on the road in Texas. They take on Trinity University February 1, Texas Lutheran on February 2, and close out the road stand at Southwestern University on February 4.
The Panthers home opener will be on Saturday, Feb. 11 when they play host to Covenant College.
