BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team's quarterfinal match against Oglethorpe University in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament Friday came down to the third set of #6 singles, as the Panthers battled to a 5-4 victory. BSC (9-6) advances to the semifinals against regular season champion Sewanee Saturday morning with the win.
The Panthers took #1 and #2 doubles to push ahead 2-1 going into singles play. Alex Makarenko (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS) and Jamie Bekaert (Johns Creek, Ga./Rivers Academy) pulled out their #2 and #5 singles matches in straight sets, respectively. But the Stormy Petrels won at #1, #3, and #4 singles to tie the match up at 4-all.
Lee Thompson (Boaz, Ala./Boaz HS) won his first set at #6 singles 6-2, but then fell 2-6 in the second to force a third and decisive set. He battled back from being down 3-0 to take the set 6-4, and his match to secure the Panthers win.
BSC's match against Sewanee is set to begin at 9 a.m. Fans can follow the results online at tournament central.
