BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With only one senior, the Birmingham-Southern men's tennis team is young and ready for a run at a Southern Athletic Association title.
"The team has been working very hard on their conditioning and becoming mentally tougher," said Head Coach Jimmy Weinacker. "Our success will be determined by our desire and determination to compete for each other."
Key returners leading the charge for the Panthers are senior Anthony Pellegrini (Huntsville, Ala./Huntsville HS), junior Jameson Bekaert (Johns Creek, Ga./Rivers Academy), and sophomore Alex Wisener (Horton, Ala./Douglas HS). Team captain this season, Pellegrini was second team all-conference in 2018 playing out of the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles positions.
New to the Hilltop and expected to make an impact are Ethan Gibson (Huntsville, Ala./Covenant Christian) and Isaac Eck (Boca Raton, Fla./Home Schooled). "Ethan had a great fall season with some big wins at the regional ITA tournament," said Weinacker. "He's a very smart singles player with a steady baseline game. And Isaac is a big strong physical player who covers the court well and has great doubles skills."
The Panthers begin the 2019 spring season on the road at LaGrange College on Saturday, Feb. 2 and then travel to Spring Hill College on February 3. They open at home on Saturday, Feb. 9 against Covenant College. Their conference schedule starts on the road at Oglethorpe University on Saturday, March 30.
"All of our conference matches are important, but Millsaps, Oglethorpe, and Rhodes will determine our seeding spot for the conference tournament," Weinacker added.
The 2019 SAA Tournament runs from April 25-27 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
