ROME, Ga.—Sophomore Chris Roberts became Birmingham-Southern's first-ever NCAA Cross Country Championship qualifier on Saturday, placing 12th at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, hosted by Berry College in Rome, Ga. The Panther men placed 10th as a team, and the women were 15th.
Roberts recorded an 8K time of 25:52.72 to finish 12th in the field of 201 runners, earning All-Region honors by finishing in the top 35. BSC finished 10th in the field of 28 teams.
On the women's side, the Panthers were 15th in a field of 29 teams. Sophomore Shannon Walsh also earned All-Region honors, placing 34th with a 6K time of 23:35.44.
"I am extremely proud of our athletes and the way they raced today," Head Coach Kenneth Cox said. "After our conference finishes we knew that we could come out and race better. In a strong conference and region, it says a lot that we had some impressive finishes on the men's and women's sides. I can't say enough about our top finishers, too. Shannon Walsh had a great race to finish 34th overall and make the All-Region team. As for Chris Roberts, he delivered one of the strongest races that I have ever seen from our team captain. We are excited about him qualifying for nationals and making the All-Region team in process."
The NCAA Division III Championship will take place next Saturday, Nov. 22, in Mason, Ohio.
