Panthers sweep Spring Hill to remain unbeaten

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Birmingham-Southern softball team remained undefeated with two wins against Spring Hill College, Monday evening at BSC Softball Park. The Panthers won the first game, 5-1, and the second, 8-0 in five innings, moving to 8-0 on the season. The Badgers drop to 4-10.

BSC scored its first run in the first inning of game one on an RBI single from junior #Tori Harris#, and went up 2-0 in the third on an RBI ground-out by junior #Jena Franks#.

The Panthers scored their final three runs in the fourth inning, scoring on a Spring Hill error and a two-run triple by senior #Kayla Backlund#.

SHC got on the board in the fifth with an RBI single by Jessica Edgar, but was unable to score again.

Senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld# pitched the entire game and moves to 4-0 on the season after giving up six hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts. Brittany Abate took the loss for Spring Hill, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts.

Muehlenfeld was also 3-of-4 at the plate, and Backlund was 2-of-3. Six different Badgers picked up single hits.

In game two, Harris started in the circle and threw a no-hitter for BSC, and also hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Along with an RBI single from Franks and a run scored on an error, the Panthers led 4-0 heading into the second inning.

BSC scored three more in the fourth inning courtesy of a bases-loaded RBI single by freshman #Ashley Bice#, another single by Franks, and a bases-loaded walk, pushing the lead to 7-0. In the bottom of the fifth, an RBI triple by Backlund put BSC up 8-0 to end the game early.

Harris moves to 3-0 in the circle with the no-hitter, and struck out three batters. For the Badgers, Samantha Brooks threw 4.2 innings and gave up 10 hits and six earned runs with eight strikeouts.

Backlund was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Franks, Harris, and senior #Erin Glover# were all 2-for-3.

The Panthers have out-scored their opponents 66-5 thus far in 2009, collecting 27 extra-base hits and 56 RBI. The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 0.15 and has allowed their opponents to hit only .145.

BSC is on the road for its next doubleheader, traveling to face LaGrange College, Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m. ET.
