LaGRANGE, Ga. - Four different Panthers hit home runs on Sunday, including a grand slam in the top of the seventh of game two by junior #Jena Franks#, as the Birmingham-Southern softball team swept LaGrange College, 6-3 and 9-0, to stay undefeated at 10-0 on the season.
In game one, BSC went up 2-0 in the top of the first on a two-run homer from senior #Kayla Backlund#. In the top of the third, the Panthers extended the lead to 5-0 on another two-run bomb, this time from junior #Tori Harris#, and a sacrifice fly-out by freshman #Ashley Bice#.
LaGrange scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth when Kristi Underwood hit a two-RBI double and scored on a BSC error, but BSC scored one more in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple from Bice to push the lead to 6-3. BSC held LaGrange scoreless for the remainder of the game for the win.
Senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld# threw all seven innings for BSC, giving up four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Her ERA remains impressive at 0.66 on the season, and she moves to 5-0. Katie Hein picked up the loss for LaGrange after giving up eight hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts.
In the second game, BSC got on the board first in the top of the second on an RBI single by freshman #Ronni Ferris#, and in the top of the third, Muehlenfeld scored on a passed ball to put BSC up 2-0. In the top of the fourth, freshman #Emily Merritt# led off the inning with a home run over the left field fence to put the Panthers up 3-0.
BSC had an offensive explosion in the top of the seventh, scoring on an RBI single by Backlund, another passed ball, and a grand slam by Franks to put BSC up 9-0. LaGrange was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and BSC picked up the shutout victory.
Harris was the winning pitcher for BSC, moving to 4-0 on the season after giving up only two hits with five strikeouts in the shutout. Danielle LaDuron took the loss for LaGrange, allowing 14 hits and eight earned runs with two strikeouts.
Freshman #Beth Lefler# was 3-of-4 in game two, while Muehlenfeld led BSC with four total hits in the doubleheader.
BSC has out-scored its opponents 81-8 this season and out-hit them 110-30. The Panthers have picked up 36 extra-base hits, including nine home runs, and are 25-of-26 on stolen bases. The BSC pitching staff has recorded six total shutouts, three of those from Harris, and owns a 0.34 combined ERA while allowing a .141 opponent batting average.
The Panthers stay on the road for their next six games, traveling to Ridgeland, Miss., for the Millsaps College Invitational, which begins Friday, March 13. BSC will face LeTourneau, UT Dallas, UT Tyler, Mississippi College, and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents Trinity and Southwestern. The Panthers then return home for the first time since Feb. 23 on March 21 to face Sewanee.
