MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Senior #Kayla Backlund# had two triples and three RBI today in helping the Birmingham-Southern softball team stay undefeated at 11-0 with an 8-0 five-inning win against Huntingdon College in Montgomery. The game was scheduled yesterday after this weekend's Millsaps College Invitational, in which the Panthers were supposed to play, was canceled due to weather.
BSC went up 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single by junior #Tori Harris#, and increased the lead to 2-0 in the second on an RBI ground-out by senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld#.
The Panthers scored four runs in the fourth inning on a three-run triple by Backlund and another RBI single from Harris, and added two more in the fifth on a Huntingdon error and an interference call. The Hawks were unable to score in the bottom of the fifth, and the game ended early with a final score of 8-0 in favor of BSC.
Backlund and Harris led with two hits apiece, and six other Panthers had one hit apiece for a total of eight.
Freshman #Ronni Ferris# picked up the win and the shutout in the circle after pitching all five innings and giving up only two hits with four strikeouts. She moves to 2-0 on the season.
