Softball shuts out Sewanee in SCAC opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern softball team moved to 14-2 on the season, Saturday, with a doubleheader shutout of Sewanee, winning by the scores of 9-0 and 20-0, both in five innings, at BSC Softball Park. The Tigers drop to 0-4 with the two losses. The teams will face each other again tomorrow in a noon doubleheader.
In game one, senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld# and freshman #Ashley Bice# were both 2-of-3 at the plate, while junior #Jena Franks# led with two RBI. The Panthers collected 10 total hits in the 9-0 win, and scored five runs in the third and four in the fourth.
Muehlenfeld recorded the win in the circle to move to 7-1 on the season, giving up only two hits and striking out 10 batters with no walks in five innings of work. Courtney Hinkle took the loss for Sewanee, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs with one strikeout.
In the second game of the day, the Panthers picked up 13 runs in the first inning, added five more in the second and two in the fourth. Franks was 3-of-3, freshman #Beth Lefler# was 3-of-4, and senior #Kayla Backlund# was 3-of-5. Sophomore #Melissa Revis#, senior #Erin Glover#, and freshman #Ronni Ferris# were all 2-of-3, and Franks and Revis led with three RBI apiece. The Panthers recorded 21 total hits in the 20-0 win.
Ferris was the winning pitcher for BSC, moving to 3-0 on the season after giving up three hits with five strikeouts in the five-inning shutout. Regan Rau started for the Tigers and threw 0.1 inning, giving up 11 hits and five earned runs before Hinkle came in for the remaining 3.2 innings and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs. Rau drops to 0-2 with the loss.
The Panthers have now out-scored their opponents 124-26 on the season, and out-hit them 166-61. BSC has recorded 28 doubles, 11 triples, and 10 home runs, as well as 103 RBI and 246 total bases. Backlund leads the team batting .538 and slugging .981, Franks leads with 21 RBI, and Muehlenfeld is 12-of-12 on stolen bases.
The BSC pitching staff owns a combined ERA of 1.14 while allowing a .180 opponent batting average. The Panthers have also recorded nine shutouts in 16 games.
