BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior #Tori Harris# and freshman #Beth Lefler# each threw no-hitters today to lead the Birmingham-Southern (16-2) softball team to two more shutouts of Sewanee (0-6), 13-0 and 14-0, at BSC Softball Park. The Panthers shut out the Tigers in all four games of the series this weekend to open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Panthers recorded 14 hits in game one, led by junior #Jena Franks# with a 3-of-4 performance at the plate and three RBI. Senior #Erin Glover# was also 2-of-3 with two doubles.
Harris struck out nine batters in five innings of work to pick up the no-hitter and the shutout, moving to 5-1 on the season. Courtney Hinkle dropped to 0-3 after giving up 14 hits and six earned runs in four innings.
In game two, BSC picked up nine hits, led by senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld#, who was 2-of-3, and Franks, who was 2-of-4. Freshmen #Ashley Bice# and #Emily Merritt# led with two RBI each, and Muehlenfeld also had two stolen bases.
Lefler threw five innings and struck out seven batters for her first win of the season to move to 1-0. Regan Rau took the loss for Sewanee, dropping to 0-3 after allowing nine hits and eight earned runs with two strikeouts.
After this weekend's four shutouts against Sewanee, BSC is out-scoring its opponents 151 to 26 and out-hitting them 189 to 61. The Panthers have recorded 57 extra-base hits (36 doubles, 11 triples, 10 home runs) and 122 RBI. The BSC pitching staff has a combined ERA of 1.03 and has posted 11 shutouts and 104 strikeouts while allowing a .166 opponent batting average.
BSC is on the road this Tuesday, March 24, traveling south to Mobile to face Spring Hill College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Panthers return home this weekend to face Austin College in a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader and an 11 a.m. Sunday doubleheader.
