Softball sweeps Spring Hill on the road

MOBILE, Ala. -
The Birmingham-Southern softball team won its sixth and seventh straight games today on the road, defeating Spring Hill College in Mobile by the scores of 3-1 and 6-5. The Panthers are now 18-2 on the season.

In the first game, a two-run homer from senior #Kayla Backlund# in the top of the first gave BSC a 2-0 lead, and an RBI single by Backlund in the top of the seventh extended the lead to 3-1. The Badgers were able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough and the Panthers recorded the victory.

Senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld# was the winning pitcher, moving to 8-1 on the season after giving up five hits with three strikeouts.

In the second game, SHC scored two runs in the first inning and another in the third to go up 3-0, but BSC responded with five runs in the top of the fourth with RBI singles from senior #Erin Glover#, Muehlenfeld, and junior #Jena Franks#, and a two-run triple by Backlund.

Spring Hill scored again in the bottom of the fifth, but BSC also scored again in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from freshman #Ashley Bice# to put the Panthers up 6-4. SHC was able to get one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but not tie things up, and BSC came away with the 6-5 victory.

Freshman #Beth Lefler# (2-0) was the pitcher of record for BSC after coming in in the bottom of the fourth and pitching three innings, giving up three hits. Junior #Tori Harris# started in the circle and allowed two hits with two strikeouts in three innings, and Muehlenfeld came in for the final inning to pick up the save, her first of the year.

The Panthers are at home this weekend to face Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Austin College in two doubleheaders: Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
