BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With a 5-2 win and a 4-3 loss today against Austin College, the No. 19 Birmingham-Southern softball team won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against the 'Roos, 3-1, and moved to 21-3 on the season. AC moves to 9-15 with today's split, and breaks a 10-game win streak by the Panthers with the victory in game two.
In game one, BSC scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when senior #Kayla Backlund# hit a sacrifice fly-out to plate senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld#. Austin College tied things up in the top of the fourth on a single through the left side by Courtney Stone.
The BSC offense came through in the bottom of the fifth as junior #Jena Franks# hit an RBI single to center field to score Muehlenfeld, freshman #Ashley Bice# hit a two-RBI double to left-center to plate Franks and Backlund, and freshman #Brittany Vintson# RBI singled to right field to put BSC up 5-1.
Austin was able to put one more run up in the top of the seventh on an RBI single up the middle by Kali Gossett.
Junior #Tori Harris# picked up the win, moving to 6-1 on the season after giving up four hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Ashley Johnson took the loss to drop to 5-6 after allowing eight hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts.
Muehlenfeld led BSC at the plate, going 3-4, while Bice was 2-3 with two RBI.
The 'Roos came out strong in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first on an RBI double to left-center by Suzanne Beltran and a two-RBI double down the left field line by Stefanie Faith.
The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a two-run homer by Backlund, but AC scored another one in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple to right-center by Bobbi Schulle, putting the 'Roos up 4-2.
BSC cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double to left field by Franks, but wasn't able to score again in the game.
Kiely Harrison was the winning pitcher for Austin College, allowing eight hits and three earned runs to move to 3-1 on the season. Muehlenfeld took the loss for BSC to drop to 9-2 after giving up four hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts.
Backlund was 3-3 at the plate with two RBI, and Franks was 2-4.
With a 21-3 record on the season, the Panthers have out-scored their opponents 182-40, out-hit them 240-85, and hold a 152-34 advantage in RBI. BSC has accumulated 74 extra-base hits with 47 doubles, 14 triples, and 13 home runs. The pitching staff owns a 1.13 combined ERA with 11 shutouts, 129 strikeouts, and a .168 opponent batting average.
The Panthers are at home again this Thursday, April 2, taking on Huntingdon College in a single game beginning at 4 p.m. at BSC Softball Park.
