DANVILLE, Ky. - Junior #Jena Franks# hit three home runs today to help the Birmingham-Southern softball team complete a four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series sweep of Centre College in Danville, Ky. The Panthers won 9-6 and 11-1, and move to 25-3 on the season, while Centre drops to 4-22.
Centre took the lead in game one in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs, and BSC answered in the top of the second with four runs, scoring on an error, an RBI single by freshman #Brittany Vintson#, a run scored on a stolen base, and an RBI ground-out by senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld#.
BSC scored three more in the top of the third with a lead-off Franks home run, an RBI double by junior #Tori Harris#, and a bases-loaded walk, putting the Panthers up 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Centre cut the lead to 7-5 on a two-run single, but BSC also added two in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Franks to bring the score to 9-5. In the bottom of the seventh, Centre rallied with two more runs, but not enough to tie things up, and the Panthers took the 9-7 victory.
Muehlenfeld and senior #Erin Glover# were 3-4 at the plate, freshman #Ashley Bice# and Vintson were 2-4, and senior #Kayla Backlund# was 2-5.
Freshman #Beth Lefler# started in the circle and was the winning pitcher for BSC, moving to 3-0 after giving up two hits in one inning. Freshman #Ronni Ferris# came in for the remaining six innings, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts to pick up the save.
In game two, BSC scored two in the top of the first on an RBI double by Bice and when Backlund scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers put three more runs on the board in the top of the third on a two-run homer by Franks and an RBI single by Lefler.
BSC went up 7-0 in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly-out by Franks, and Centre finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a home run.
In the top of the sixth, Franks hit another two-run home run and sophomore #Melissa Revis# hit a two-run double to put BSC up 11-1. The Colonels were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, and the game ended early with the 10-run Panther win.
Lefler went 3-4 in the game, and Franks and Bice were each 2-3. Franks led with five RBI.
Muehlenfeld pitched the entire game for BSC to move to 11-2 on the season, giving up four hits with one strikeout.
BSC returns home for its final home games of the season this Thursday and Friday, April 8 and 9, taking on Millsaps College in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday and a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. Friday will also be Senior Day for the Panthers.
