BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The No. 21 Birmingham-Southern softball team completed the four-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference sweep of Millsaps College, Friday, with 5-1 and 6-1 wins. The Panthers move to 29-3 on the season, and the Majors drop to 12-19.
Millsaps scored first in the first game, going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground-out by Karoline Kremers. BSC answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a sacrifice fly-out by junior #Jena Franks# and when senior #Melissa Muehlenfeld# scored on a Majors error.
The Panthers increased the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third when Muehlenfeld, BSC's career stolen base leader, stole home on a double steal. Senior #Erin Glover# wrapped up the scoring in the first game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI infield single, plating junior #Tori Harris# and freshman #Ashley Bice# to put BSC up 5-1. Millsaps was unable to score in the top of the seventh for the BSC win.
Muehlenfeld pitched all seven innings for the Panthers, giving up six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts to move to 13-2 on the season. Kasey Thibodeaux took the loss for Millsaps, dropping to 6-10 after allowing four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts in three innings. Amanda Bintz came in for the final three innings and gave up two hits and two earned runs.
Bice was 2-3 at the plate and Muehlenfeld was 2-4, while Glover led with two RBI. Amanda Berry was 3-3 for Millsaps and Jenny Laird was 2-3.
In game two, Bice got things started with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first, her third of the season. In the bottom of the second, Muehlenfeld scored on a wild pitch, Franks recorded another sacrifice fly-out, and Bice hit an RBI single to put the Panthers up 6-0.
The Majors were able to ruin the shutout in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Erica Douglas, but did not score again and the Panthers came away with the 6-1 victory.
Freshman #Ronni Ferris# was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and giving up six hits with one earned run and eight strikeouts. She moves to 6-0 on the season. Brittney McAllister dropped to 4-6 after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing four hits and six earned runs. Bintz threw the final 3.2 innings and gave up three hits with a strikeout.
Ferris was 2-3 in game two and Bice was 2-4 with four RBI. Douglas was 3-4 for the Majors while Tiffany Ladnier was 2-4.
The Panthers, ranked 21st in the nation by Division III Softball: The Newsletter, have out-scored their opponents 245-49 this season and out-hit them 319-122. BSC has recorded 66 doubles, 16 triples, and 21 home runs, as well as 202 RBI and 480 total bases. The pitching staff owns a combined earned run average of 1.15 with 16 shutouts, 170 strikeouts, and a .175 opponent batting average.
Prior to today's doubleheader, which was the last home date of the season, seniors Backlund, Glover, and Muehlenfeld were honored for their contributions over the last four season.
BSC is on the road for the remainder of the year, with its next doubleheader against Alabama State on Wednesday, April 15, at 5 p.m. in Montgomery.
