Softball remains undefeated with wins against Berry, Huntingdon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
On day one of the 2010 Panther Classic, the Birmingham-Southern softball team defeated Berry College, 15-0 in five innings, and Huntingdon College, 7-6, to move to 5-0 and remain undefeated on the season.

Earlier today, Berry defeated Huntingdon, 14-6 in six innings. Berry now stands at 5-3 on the season, while Huntingdon falls to 2-6.

In the game between Huntingdon and Berry, the Lady Vikings scored a run in the bottom of the second, four in the bottom of the third, and one in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-0. But the Hawks answered with six runs in the top of the fifth to tie things up. Berry came back with more runs in the bottom of the fifth, though, scoring five to go up 11-6 and then scoring three more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 14-6 and end the game early.

For Berry, Betsy Lawson was 3-of-4 at the plate and Lauren Jeffreys was 3-of-3, while Kristin Stoll led with six RBIs and Lindsey Lowe recorded four. Brittany Mitchell led Huntingdon with two RBIs.

Caillee Shamoun started in the circle for Berry, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts. Jordan Jenkins came in for the final 1.2 innings and picked up the win, recording three strikeouts with no hits and no runs.

In the second game, BSC versus Berry, the Panthers put on an offensive show for the crowd at BSC Softball Park, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first on single RBIs from senior Tori Harris, senior Jena Franks, freshman Misha Aldridge, freshman Chelsea Fernandez, freshman Januar Page, and then a three-RBI triple for Franks again on BSC’s second run through its batting order.

The Panthers added three more runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI single from sophomore Emily Merritt and a two-run homer by Aldridge.

BSC kept up the scoring in the bottom of the third on a grand slam from Merritt, putting the Panthers up 15-0. Neither team would score in the remaining 1.5 innings, and the game ended early in the fifth.

Ferris, Franks, Merritt, and Aldridge all recorded two hits apiece, and Merritt led with five RBIs, while Ferris and Aldridge added three apiece. Berry’s two hits came from Lawson and Lindsey Campbell.

Ferris went the distance in the circle for BSC to move to 3-0 on the season, picking up 13 strikeouts and giving up only two hits in the shutout. Shamoun started and took the loss for Berry, pitching 0.2 innings before being replaced by Jenkins. They combined to give up 12 hits with no strikeouts.

The nightcap between BSC and Huntingdon was much closer. Huntingdon got on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on two BSC errors. The Hawks then went up 3-0 in the bottom of the third on a home run from Mitchell.

The Panthers, playing as the visiting team, finally scored in the top of the fourth on a walked-in run and a two-RBI single from sophomore Ashley Bice, thing things up at 3-3. BSC then took the lead in the top of the fifth when freshman Brittany Berkopec recorded a pinch-hit RBI single to score Merritt.

Huntingdon tied it back up, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Kayla Bratcher, but BSC responded with two runs in the top of the sixth – RBI singles from Aldridge and junior Melissa Revis – to go up 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks tied it up once again, scoring twice more on two more BSC errors, but the Panthers re-took the lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple from Franks. Huntingdon was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, and the Panthers picked up the 7-6 victory.

Harris, Franks, and Aldrige each recorded two hits, while Bice led with two RBIs. For the Hawks, Bratcher led with two hits.

Harris was the winning pitcher, moving to 2-0 on the season after giving up seven hits and only two earned runs with five strikeouts. Bratcher took the loss for Huntingdon, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts as well.

Action in the 2010 Panther Classic continues tomorrow as Huntingdon and Berry square off at 11 a.m., and BSC faces the Hawks again at 1 p.m. at the BSC Softball Complex.
