Softball breaks single-game scoring record in doubleheader sweep of Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. –
The Birmingham-Southern softball team remained unbeaten at 8-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Sewanee, Saturday, defeating the Tigers by the scores of 25-2 and 21-0 in Sewanee, Tenn.

The Panthers broke the single-game scoring record in the 25-2 win, besting the previous record of 24 runs in a single game, set against Alabama A&M on April 9, 2003.

Both of today’s games, which were the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference openers for BSC and the season openers for Sewanee, ended after five innings of play.

In game one, the Panthers recorded 18 hits, led by freshmen Brittany Berkopec, who was 3-of-3, and Jordan Allen, who was 3-of-4. Senior Jena Franks and junior Allison Reynolds led with five RBIs apiece, and Reynolds hit two home runs in the game. Franks and freshman Misha Aldridge, the defending SCAC Co-Player of the Week, also recorded one homer each.

Sophomore Ronni Ferris, who has been named SCAC Pitcher of the Week twice in the last two weeks, picked up the win to move to 5-0 on the season, giving up only two hits with 11 strikeouts in the five-inning shutout.

In the nightcap, BSC had 17 hits, led by Franks with a 4-of-6 showing at the plate. She also led with six RBIs and had one home run. Allen, sophomore Emily Merritt, and freshman Januar Page also had three hits apiece.

Freshman Beth Lefler saw her first appearance in the circle in game two and allowed three hits with seven strikeouts in five innings, picking up her first win and first shutout.

The teams will face off again tomorrow in a noon doubleheader.
