MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team moved to 11-3 on the season with a 6-1 loss to Ohio Northern and a 9-0 win against Maryville College, Saturday, on day one of the Maryville Classic.
In the loss to ONU, the Panthers gave up two runs in the top of the first on a two-run home run, then scored one of their own in the bottom of the second when senior Tori Harris was able to cross the plate after an error.
The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Ohio Northern plated four runs, one on a bases-loaded walk, two on an RBI single, and another on an RBI double. BSC was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, and ONU won 6-1.
Sophomore Ronni Ferris took the loss in the circle for BSC, dropping to 6-2 after giving up nine hits and six earned runs with an impressive 13 strikeouts. The Panthers recorded only two hits, one apiece from freshmen Danielle Rucker and Brittany Berkopec.
In BSC’s second game against the host Scots, the Panthers got on the board in the top of the second on an RBI double down the left field line by Harris. In the top of the fourth, the Panthers scored on RBI singles from freshman Jordan Allen, Rucker, senior Jena Franks, and Ferris, and a two-RBI single from Berkopec to go up 6-0.
BSC scored three more in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from sophomore Ashley Bice and two bases-loaded walks. Maryville was unable to score in the bottom of the fifth, and the game ended early with a 9-0 victory by the Panthers.
Harris was the winning pitcher, moving to 3-1 after allowing two hits with four strikeouts in the shutout. Ferris and Harris led BSC with two hits apiece, and the Panthers recorded 10 total hits in the game. Berkopec led with three RBIs, while Allen had two.
Action in the Classic continues tomorrow as BSC takes on SCAC rival Centre College in a non-conference game at 12:30 p.m., and then faces Maryville again at 2:30 p.m.
