MARYVILLE, Tenn. – On day two of the Maryville College Classic, the Birmingham-Southern softball team notched two wins, defeating SCAC rival Centre College, 5-2, in non-conference action, and the host Scots, 3-0, to move to 13-3 on the season.
Centre scored first in game one on an RBI ground-out in the top of the second, and the score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when sophomore Beth Lefler tied things up with a single up the middle to score senior Jena Franks, who led off the inning with a double and a stolen base. The Panthers took the lead on a sacrifice fly-out by sophomore Ashley Bice to score Lefler, and then went up 3-1 on an RBI single by freshman Januar Page to plate senior Tori Harris, who reached first on an error.
Still with only one out on the board, freshman Danielle Rucker reached base on another Centre error, and she and Page then recorded a double steal, followed by Page scoring on a wild pitch to put BSC up 4-1. Sophomore Ronni Ferris then wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single to bring Rucker home and put the Panthers up 5-1.
The Colonels were able to score one more run in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch.
Harris was the winning pitcher for BSC after giving up six hits and one earned run with five strikeouts to move to 4-1 on the season.
In the second game against Maryville, neither team scored until the top of the fifth, when BSC got on the board with a two-RBI single by junior Melissa Revis, scoring Harris and freshman Brittany Berkopec. The Panthers scored another run in the top of the sixth when Bice led off the inning with a home run over the left-center field fence for her second homer of the season.
Lefler pitched all seven innings and allowed only three hits with two strikeouts in the shutout, moving to 2-0 on the season.
BSC returns home next weekend, continuing conference action with two doubleheaders against Rhodes College, Saturday, March 27, and Sunday, March 28, both at 1 p.m. at BSC Softball Park.
