BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team completed a four-game conference sweep of Rhodes College with two more wins today at the BSC Softball Park.
The Panthers won the first game, 3-0, and the second game, 10-7, to move to 17-3 on the season overall and 8-0 in SCAC play. Rhodes drops to 19-11 overall and 1-7 in the league.
In game one, the Panthers went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by freshman Misha Aldridge. They scored two more in the bottom of the fourth after sophomore Ashley Bice led off with a home run and sophomore Ronni Ferris picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Neither team would score again after that to give the Panthers the 3-0 shutout.
Ferris went the distance in the circle after her perfect game yesterday, giving up only two hits and one walk with five strikeouts to move to 9-2 on the season. Sara Bowen took the loss for the Lynx, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
Rhodes was the first to score in the nightcap, getting two runs in the top of the first, but BSC responded with four runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Bice, a double steal by Bice from first to second and senior Tori Harris from third to home, and an RBI single from junior Allison Reynolds.
BSC scored three more in the bottom of the second when Ferris hit a two-run homer and Harris recorded an RBI single. Rhodes added another run in the top of the third on a Bowen RBI single, cutting the BSC lead to 7-3.
The Panthers scored two more in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Harris and junior Melissa Revis, and went up 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a Ferris RBI single.
Rhodes tried to mount its comeback in the top of the sixth, as Jennifer Whatley hit a triple and then scored on a BSC error, and Kelli Zomer scored on a wild pitch, cutting the Panther lead to 10-5. BSC was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lynx scored on an RBI single from Armanda Venezia and a run scored on another BSC error in the top of the seventh. Rhodes wasn’t able to score again in the inning, however, and the Panthers clinched the 10-7 victory.
Sophomore Beth Lefler picked up the win in the circle, moving to 3-0 after giving up seven hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts in five innings. Harris threw the final two innings and gave up six hits with three strikeouts. Chelsea Peters started for Rhodes and went five innings, giving up 12 hits with three strikeouts. Cindy Bitters pitched the final inning and gave up one hit.
The Panthers are back on the diamond this weekend at home, taking on Centre College in doubleheaders on Friday, April 2 at 5 p.m., and Saturday, April 3, at noon.
