BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team won its eighth and ninth straight games today, defeating Centre College in conference action by the scores of 8-0 and 3-1 at the BSC Softball Park.
BSC moves to 19-3 overall and 10-0 in SCAC play, while the Colonels drop to 14-12 overall and 4-2 in the league.
In game one, BSC put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple from sophomore Ashley Bice, an RBI single from sophomore Beth Lefler, and a two-RBI single from senior Jena Franks.
Sophomore Ronni Ferris recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to put BSC up 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers went up 6-0 on a Centre error, then 7-0 on another RBI from Franks, and sophomore Emily Merritt recorded the game-winning RBI to put BSC up 8-0 to end the game early.
Ferris threw all five innings for the Panthers, striking out 10 batters and giving up four hits for her sixth shutout of the season to move to 10-2. Emily Landherr took the loss in the circle for Centre, giving up seven hits and four earned runs with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Charlotte Jones also pitched 2.0 innings and allowed three hits and one earned run with a strikeout, and Jess Jowers came in for the final out and gave up one hit.
Franks was 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while Mary Saylor was 2-of-2 for the Colonels.
In the nightcap, the Panthers went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Bice and an RBI single from freshman Danielle Rucker. Their final run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double from freshman MIsha Aldridge.
In the top of the sixth, Centre ruined senior Tori Harris’ no-hitter with a triple to right field, and the Colonels picked up another hit and a run in the top of the seventh when Regina Sena tripled and then scored on an RBI ground-out by Elizabeth Fenwick. Centre was unable to score again, and BSC picked up the 3-1 victory.
Harris went the distance in the circle, giving up only two hits with five strikeouts to move to 5-1 on the season. Emily Meador took the loss to drop to 5-6 after allowing eight hits with four strikeouts.
Ferris and Harris were both 2-of-3 at the plate for BSC.
The Panthers and the Colonels face off again tomorrow in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the BSC Softball Park.
