BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team completed the four-game conference series sweep of Centre College, Saturday, with 1-0 and 2-0 victories at BSC Softball Park.
The Panthers, who have now won 11 straight games, move to 21-3 overall and 12-0 in conference play, and lead the SCAC Eastern Division standings. Centre drops to 14-14 overall and 4-4 in the SCAC.
In game one, BSC was getting hits but unable to score, leaving five runners on base before finally getting on the board in the bottom of the fifth after freshman Januar Page singled, stole second, and scored on a deep single to left-center by sophomore Ronni Ferris. That was the only run scored in the game, and BSC picked up the 1-0 victory.
Ferris also pitched the entire game, allowing only one hit with six strikeouts in her seventh shutout of the season to move to 11-2. Emily Meador took the loss for Centre after giving up eight hits with one strikeout.
Game two was also low-scoring, with the Panthers picking up a run in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Danielle Rucker scored on a wild pitch. BSC went up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a double steal, with junior Allison Reynolds scoring the run. Neither team would score for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore Beth Lefler moved to 4-0 on the season after allowing four hits with one strikeout in the shutout. Jess Jowers gave up five hits and one earned run with one strikeout in the Centre loss.
As a team, the Panthers are now out-scoring their opponents 176-45 and out-hitting them 228-117. BSC is 54-of-62 on stolen bases, and has recorded 32 doubles, six triples, and 16 home runs. The BSC pitching staff owns an ERA of 1.26 with 171 strikeouts and a .206 opponent batting average.
BSC is on the road for its next games, traveling north to take on conference rival DePauw University in two doubleheaders, Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11, in Greencastle, Ind.
