BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In its last home date of the year, the Birmingham-Southern softball team split with Spring Hill College, Wednesday, winning game one, 8-0 in six innings, but dropping the nightcap, 5-0. The Panthers move to 22-8 on the season, taking their first home loss of the season, while the Badgers move to 18-23.
In game one, sophomore Ashley Bice recorded a sacrifice fly-out to put BSC up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the second, junior Allison Reynolds doubled to plate freshman Brittany Berkopec and put the Panthers up 2-0.
BSC did not score again until the fifth, when an RBI double from sophomore Ronni Ferris, an RBI single from Bice, and a three-run home run from freshman Misha Aldridge gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Bice ended the game early in the bottom of the sixth with two outs when she hit an RBI triple to put BSC up 8-0.
Ferris, Bice, and Aldridge were all 2-of-3 at the plate, while Bice and Aldridge led with three RBIs each. Monica Zeringue led Spring Hill with all three of its hits, going 3-of-3.
Ferris was also the winning pitcher, moving to 12-4 on the season after allowing three hits with seven strikeouts in her eighth shutout of the year. Samantha Brooks took the loss for the Badgers, giving up eight hits with three strikeouts in four innings to drop to 9-15. Lauren Crane threw the final 1.2 innings and allowed three hits.
In the nightcap, the Badgers found their bats early, going up 1-0 in the top of the first on an RBI single from Ersy Pacheco. In the top of the second, the Badgers scored on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Brooke Turlich to go up 3-0, and added another run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly-out by Turlich. The Badgers then scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI double from Zeringue.
Brittany Abate picked up the win for SHC, moving to 7-3 after giving up five hits with one strikeout. Senior Tori Harris started and took the loss for BSC, dropping to 5-3 after allowing six hits and three earned runs in two innings. Sophomore Beth Lefler replaced her in the third and allowed seven hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.
Jessica Edgar was 3-of-4 for Spring Hill, while Lindsey Taylor was 2-of-3 and Zeringue, Pacheco, and Katelyn Hinson were all 2-of-4. Turlich led with two RBIs. Aldridge went 2-of-3 for the Panthers.
The Panthers are on the road this weekend, traveling to Mount Berry, Ga., to face Berry College, Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m. ET.
