ROME, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern softball team was on the road today, splitting with Berry College with a 3-2 loss in game one and a 3-0 win in game two. The Panthers move to 23-9 on the season, while the Vikings move to 18-18.
In game one, Berry scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, but BSC answered with two runs in the top of the second on RBI singles from senior Tori Harris and junior Allison Reynolds.
The Panthers kept the lead until the bottom of the fifth when a two-run double gave the Vikings the 3-2 lead. BSC was unable to score again, and the Vikings came away with the one-run victory.
Reynolds was 2-of-3 at the plate, while sophomore Ashley Bice was 2-of-4. The Panthers recorded nine hits in all, while Berry posted seven.
Sophomore Ronni Ferris took the loss in the circle, dropping to 12-5 after giving up seven hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts.
In game two, BSC scored its first run in the top of the fourth when freshman Jordan Allen scored on a stolen base attempt by Harris, who was thrown out at second after Allen crossed the plate. The Panthers scored two more in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Bice and an RBI ground-out b y freshman Brittany Berkopec. BSC held the Vikings scoreless for the remainder of the game for the 3-0 shutout.
Reynolds and senior Jena Franks were both 2-of-2 at the plate, and Ferris was 2-of-4. BSC had 11 hits while Berry had only two. Harris was the winning pitcher, giving up only two hits with nine strikeouts in her second shutout of the year.
The Panthers wrap up the 2010 season on the road next Saturday, April 24, traveling to face LaGrange College in a 2 p.m. ET doubleheader.
