BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—In the last home games of the season, the Birmingham-Southern softball team split with Covenant College this evening at BSC Softball Park, winning the first game 3-0 and losing the second game by the same score.
The Panthers move to 23-9 overall, while the Scots now stand at 15-9.
It was Senior Night for BSC, with lone senior Melissa Revis being honored during pregame festivities. The Panthers were also honored by incoming BSC president Charles Krulak, who presented them with a banner for recently winning the SCAC East Division, and BSC alumna Marion Phillips (class of '52) also threw out the first pitch.
In the first game, the Panthers scored their first two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a fielder's choice RBI by sophomore Brittany Berkopec, and a run scored on a Covenant error. BSC scored the third and final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by junior Ashley Bice.
Junior Ronni Ferris (13-6) pitched all seven innings, giving up two hits with seven strikeouts in her fourth shutout of the season. Chelsea Krafft took the loss for the Lady Scots, allowing five hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts in six innings.
Ferris also led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-of-3, while Jennie Jobe and Lindsay Potter recorded the Lady Scots' two hits.
In the nightcap, Covenant scored two runs to open the game in the top of the first on an RBI single from Jobe and a sacrifice fly-out by Courtney Wagoner. The Lady Scots added one more run in the top of the seventh - an RBI single by Kim Cuticchia - while holding the Panthers scoreless.
Krafft (12-4) threw the complete game again, giving up four hits with six strikeouts. Junior Beth Lefler (10-3) took the loss for BSC, allowing eight hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.
Cuticchia was 2-of-3 for Covenant, while four different Panthers recorded single hits.
The Panthers wrap up the season on the road next weekend, traveling to Rome, Ga., to face Berry College, Saturday, April 23, in a 1 p.m. ET doubleheader.
