ROME, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team capped off the 2011 season today with a road sweep of Berry College, winning 8-5 and 8-2 in Rome, Ga. The Panthers end the season at 25-9, while the Vikings fall to 20-16.
In game one, Berry went up 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, and BSC cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the third on a three-run homer by junior Ashley Bice. BSC took over the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs courtesy of a grand slam by sophomore Brittany Berkopec and a sacrifice fly-out RBI by senior Melissa Revis. Berry was able to add one more run in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 8-5, but the Panthers hung on for the win.
Sophomore Danielle Rucker was 2-of-4 at the plate and Revis was 2-of-2. BSC had seven hits, and Berry had 10. Junior pitcher Ronni Ferris (14-6) threw the complete game, giving up 10 hits with eight strikeouts.
In the second game, Berry took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and the Panthers came back in the top of the fourth and scored five runs, thanks to a two-RBI double from Berkopec, and RBI singles from junior Emily Merritt, Revis, and sophomore Jordan Allen. BSC added two more in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Bice and a ground-out RBI by sophomore Chelsea Fernandez to go up 7-1. The Vikings cut it to 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth, and BSC added one more run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Berkopec.
Four different Panthers recorded two hits each, and BSC has 12 total hits to Berry's nine. Junior Beth Lefler (11-3) started and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits and one earned run. Ferris came in for the final 2.2 innings and got her third save of the season, allowing no hits or runs while striking out five batters.
