GREENCASTLE, Ind.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team scored two big upsets today, defeating No. 4 DePauw University twice in a doubleheader by the scores of 9-1 and 10-5. BSC extends its win streak to eight games, moving to 21-7 overall and 12-2 in the SCAC with the wins.
BSC scored one run in the top of the first inning of game one, then added three more in the top of the third before DePauw finally scored in the bottom of the third to cut it to 4-1. The score remained at 4-1 until the top of the seventh when BSC exploded for five runs, four of those off a grand slam by sophomore Chelsea Fernandez. The Tigers were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, giving BSC the 9-1 victory.
The Panthers totaled 12 hits, led by sophomore Brittany Berkopec who was 4-of-4 with five RBI. Junior pitcher Ronni Ferris (12-5) threw the complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts.
In game two, BSC again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, and scored four runs in the top of the third. DePauw scored once in the bottom of the third to cut it to 5-1, but BSC put two more runs on the board in the top of the fifth to go up 7-1. The Tigers cut it to 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Panthers kept scoring, going up 8-4 in the top of the sixth and 10-4 in the top of the seventh. DePauw scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 10-5.
Ferris and sophomore Danielle Rucker led BSC at the plate, with Rucker going 3-of-4 and Ferris going 3-of-5. Rucker and Fernandez each had two RBI. Junior pitcher Beth Lefler (9-2) got the win in the circle, giving up eight hits and four earned runs with one strikeout in 4.2 innings. Ferris came in for the last 2.1 innings and got the save, her second of the season.
BSC faces DePauw again tomorrow in a doubleheader at noon ET.
