Softball picks up two wins against Centre to take series, 3-1

DANVILLE, Ky.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team won two games today against Centre on the road to win the four-game series, 3-1. The Panthers won today by the scores of 6-5 and 16-0, moving to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC.

Game one was a nail-biter, with Centre scoring twice in the bottom of the second inning, and BSC tying it up in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by junior Ashley Bice.

The Colonels scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth, and the Panthers took the lead for the first time in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on an RBI triple by sophomore Brittany Berkopec, an RBI single by sophomore Chelsea Fernandez, an RBI double by junior Beth Lefler, and a run scored on an error.

Centre was able to score only once in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 6-5, and the Panthers came away with the win.

Bice was 2-of-2 at the plate with two of the Panthers' eight hits. Junior Ronni Ferris (7-4) pitched the whole game, giving up nine hits and five earned runs with eight strikeouts.

In the second game, BSC scored in the top half of all five innings, getting two in the first, three in the second, two in the third, eight in the fourth, and one in the fifth before the game ended early due to the eight-run rule.

Ferris led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-of-4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run. Bice also hit a home run in game two. Lefler (5-2) threw all five innings and gave up six hits with four strikeouts in her third shutout of the season.

BSC is at home this weekend with a four-game series against Rhodes. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., and Sunday's begins at noon.
