GREENCASTLE, Ind.—In exclusive 2011 All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) voting by the league's head coaches, five Birmingham-Southern softball players earned All-Conference honors, the league office announced today.
Junior Ashley Bice (SS) and sophomore Danielle Rucker (OF) earned First-Team nods, while junior Ronni Ferris (P) and sophomore Brittany Berkopec (3B) were named Second-Team, and sophomore Chelsea Fernandez (2B) was named Honorable Mention.
Bice, from Birmingham, led the conference this season with a .476 batting average and a .574 on-base percentage, and ranked second in slugging percentage (.774). She was also second in walks (21) and fifth in runs (37) and triples (2). Rucker, from Nashville, Tenn., hit .416 this season, which ranked ninth in the conference, with 22 RBI. She had a .483 on-base percentage, which was seventh in the SCAC.
Ferris, from Cincinatti, Ohio, was fourth in the conference with a 2.23 ERA, 117 strikeouts, and 7.45 strikeouts per game. She was first with two saves and fifth with 11 wins. Berkopec, from Mars, Pa., hit .429 this season, sixth in the conference, and led the SCAC with four triples. She was sixth in on-base percentage (.490) and seventh in slugging percentage (.659). Fernandez, from Cumming, Ga., hit .305 this year with 27 RBI.
The Panthers had a surprising season, going 25-9 after a 1-4 start, and playing with only 10 players on the roster. BSC ended up going 13-3 in SCAC play to win the first East Division title in program history.
