BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern softball team split with Rhodes at home today, winning the first game 3-1 but losing game two, 8-6, in eight innings. The Panthers move to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC.
In game one, BSC scored twice in the bottom of the fourth before giving up a single run in the top of the sixth. The Panthers added one more in the bottom of the sixth and hung on for the 3-1 victory.
Four Panther recorded single hits, and sophomore Brittany Berkopec had the lone RBI of the game. Rhodes also recorded four hits but also had four errors.
Junior Ronni Ferris threw all seven innings and gave up four hits with six strikeouts.
In the second game, BSC scored a run in the bottom of the first, and Rhodes answered with a single run in the top of the second. The score remained tied until the top of the fifth, when the Lynx took a 3-1 lead, but the Panthers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 4-3. Rhodes took back the lead in the top of the seventh with three runs to go up 6-4, and the Panthers tied it up again in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The Lynx scored twice in the top of the eighth, and held the Panthers scoreless to pick up the 8-6 victory.
Sophomore Jordan Allen led BSC at the plate, going 2-of-4, while four other Panthers had single hits. Berkopec and junior Ashley Bice had two RBI apiece.
Junior Beth Lefler started in the circle and went one inning, giving up four hits and one earned run before Ferris came in for the remainder of the game. She allowed nine hits and seven earned runs with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The teams are in action again tomorrow in a noon doubleheader at BSC Softball Park.
