Softball sweeps Covenant College

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—
The Birmingham-Southern softball team moved to a six-game winning streak today with two wins against Covenant College. The Panthers won by the scores of 9-5 and 14-5 in five innings to move to 7-5 on the season.

BSC scored first in the top of the first inning of game one on a Covenant error, but the Lady Scots answered in the bottom of the second with two runs. The Panthers tied things up in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly-out by junior Emily Merritt, and took the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Merritt and then went up 4-2 on an RBI double by sophomore Chelsea Fernandez.

In the top of the sixth, junior Ronni Ferris put the Panthers up 6-2 with a two-run triple, and they then went up 7-2 on another Covenant error. BSC put up its final two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple by sophomore Danielle Rucker and an RBI single by Ferris. The Lady Scots were able to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh but weren't able to overcome the Panthers' 9-5 lead.

Ferris was 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBI, and the Panthers had nine total hits. Ferris (4-3) also pitched all seven innings, giving up seven hits with one earned run and four strikeouts.

In game two, BSC got off to a quick start, scoring 11 runs in the top of the first on an RBI triple by junior Ashley Bice, an RBI double by sophomore Brittany Berkopec, a three-run home run by Fernandez, an RBI double by sophomore Jordan Allen, a two-RBI double by Rucker, an RBI single by Bice, a run scored on the throw after a foul-out, and an RBI double by Merritt.

Covenant scored three runs in the bottom of the first, and the Panthers also added three more in the top of the third on another RBI from Berkopec and a two-RBI double from Fernandez. The Lady Scots were able to score two more in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the eight-run rule and the game ended early.

Ferris and Bice were each 3-of-4 at the plate, but Fernandez led with five RBI. The Panthers had 17 total hits. Junior Beth Lefler (3-2) pitched all five innings and gave up 11 hits and five earned runs with two strikeouts.

BSC is on the road again tomorrow, traveling to Jackson, Miss., to face Millsaps in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
